Plenty of platforms let you add a second seller account and call themselves a marketplace. The real multi-vendor marketplace features list is longer, and skipping items on it is exactly what causes painful re-platforming eighteen months in.
1. Vendor onboarding and approval
A registration form is not onboarding. You need an approval queue, document or category verification, and the ability to suspend a vendor without deleting their history.
2. Commission management
Global commission rates are a start; per-vendor or per-category overrides are what real marketplaces need once sellers start negotiating terms.
3. Vendor payouts
Someone has to get paid on a schedule, net of commission and refunds, with a record either side can audit later.
4. A real vendor dashboard
Order management, inventory, and earnings — in a screen the vendor can use without emailing you for basic answers.
5. Reviews and ratings
Shoppers buying from an unfamiliar seller need a trust signal. Product reviews alone do not cover it; vendor-level ratings do.
6. Flexible shipping rules
Multiple vendors usually means multiple shipping origins and rates — a single flat shipping rule breaks the moment you have more than one seller.
7. Dispute and refund handling
Someone needs to mediate between buyer and vendor. Without a defined process, every dispute becomes a one-off.
8. Search and filtering that scales
A catalog fed by dozens of vendors needs faceted search and category filters from day one, not once it becomes unmanageable.
9. Marketing tools vendors can use themselves
Coupons and featured placement that vendors can run without filing a support ticket keep the platform active without adding to your workload.
10. Analytics for both sides
You need platform-wide reporting; vendors need their own sales data. Conflating the two is a common gap in DIY builds.
VendMart ships all ten as part of the Admin Panel, Vendor Panel, and Marketing & Coupons modules — the reason a purpose-built multi-vendor script is usually faster to launch than assembling these one plugin at a time.
