How to Start a Multi-Vendor Marketplace: A Launch Checklist

Launching a multi-vendor marketplace uses the same building blocks wherever you are: vendors, customers, orders and delivery. What changes from country to country is how people pay, how tax works, and which rules apply to you. This checklist covers the steps in order and flags what to check if you are launching in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE or India. It is practical guidance, not legal or tax advice; confirm the details with a local professional before you take payments.

1. Pick a niche and a model

Choose one focus first: groceries, fashion, food delivery, electronics or a B2B category. A narrow niche makes vendor recruitment, delivery and marketing simpler. You can add categories once orders are flowing. Also decide how you will earn money: commission per order, vendor subscriptions, listing fees or a mix (see marketplace commission models).

2. Choose your technology

You have three realistic routes: a hosted platform billed monthly, a custom build, or a ready-made script you host yourself. A self-hosted script gives you the source code and a one-time license with no revenue share, which is why many founders compare it with subscription platforms such as Sharetribe or a Shopify multi-vendor setup. See the pricing page for what each VendMart license includes, and the complete buyer's guide for what to compare.

3. Plan payments and vendor payouts

A marketplace has two money flows: customers paying you, and you paying vendors. Decide which payment methods you will offer (cards, digital wallets, local methods, cash on delivery) and how vendors are paid, either through a gateway's split-payment features or from your own balance on a schedule. Read payment gateways for marketplaces in the US, UK, UAE and India and how marketplaces pay vendors. Payment gateway setup is included in VendMart's installation plans if you want it configured for you.

Rules differ by country, and marketplaces often have extra responsibilities because they sit between buyers and sellers. Things to ask a local accountant or lawyer about:

  • United States: many states have marketplace facilitator rules that can make the marketplace responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on vendors' sales. You will also want a business entity and a privacy policy that covers state privacy laws.
  • United Kingdom: VAT rules can make online marketplaces responsible for VAT on some sellers' sales, and UK GDPR applies to the customer data you hold.
  • Canada: GST/HST and provincial sales tax, plus federal and provincial privacy rules.
  • Australia: GST can apply to sales made through your platform, along with the Privacy Act.
  • United Arab Emirates: a trade licence (mainland or free zone) and 5% VAT.
  • India: GST registration, and e-commerce operators have specific GST obligations.

5. Organize delivery or fulfilment

Decide who ships: vendors themselves, your own riders, or a courier service. For local delivery, define delivery zones, set fees per zone and give riders an app to accept orders and track earnings (see the delivery rider app). For shipped goods, decide how tracking and returns are handled.

6. Onboard your first vendors

Start with a small group of vendors you can support closely. Give each a vendor panel, walk them through adding products and agree how commission is charged. Your first vendors set the tone for everyone after them. See how to onboard your first 50 vendors.

7. Languages, currency and privacy

Decide whether your storefront and apps need more than one language or a different currency, and whether any language needs right-to-left layout. Local language translation is part of VendMart's Pro and Enterprise installation plans. Publish a privacy policy and cookie notice that match where your customers live.

8. Launch small, then widen

Open in one city or one category, fix what real orders reveal, then expand. Because VendMart is self-hosted, you can start on modest hosting and move to a bigger server as traffic grows. Try the live demo, then see the mobile apps and pricing pages for what is included.
